About Githabai's friends

The association was formed in 2005 by Ulrik Petersen's children and family with the help and inspiration of friends and acquaintances with the aim of supporting children in Kenya, primarily South Kinangop with the school Githabai Primary School as the center.
We have direct contact with the school without costly intermediaries and expensive administration.

The school is located on the edge of the Rift Valley at Naivasha approx. 140 km from the capital Nairobi.
The school is located in an agricultural area of small plots, where vegetables are mainly grown for resale and to feed the families.
The main crops are corn and potatoes. The weights are small and neat, so the cores are tight.
Some people are suffering from AIDS, mortality is high, and therefore an increasing number of grandparents have to care for orphans.
Education cannot be afforded here.

Lack of water was a major problem in the past.

Rainwater was collected in tanks and ponds during the rainy season, but this was not enough at all.
The water was of poor quality with health hazard to the children.

Githabai's Friends Association is currently working on 5 projects:

  • Find sponsors for distressed children's education at 4-year Secondary School, as well as sponsors for a maximum of 4 years of additional education for a youngster who has completed sponsored 4-year Secondary School.
  • Finding funds / sponsors to help the school with necessary improvements as well as funding for the purchase of educational materials, school uniforms etc.
Find funding for supplemental procurement and improvements to the newly established Githabai Health Clinic
  • Find funding for maintenance and improvements to the drinking water project after reopening drilling and establishing water supply to Githabai.
  • The projects are being developed in collaboration with the locals and with Githabai Primary School as the center.

The water project is supervised by engineer Catherine Wanjihia in collaboration with the water committee at Githabai.

Funding for the projects is sought, among other things. through contributions from associations, and companies, and through membership fees, as our association p.t. includes approx. 75 members.
The association also collects extra funds by giving lectures on the association's background and working for distressed children in Kenya.
Please note that all funds go to our projects, with all members working for free.
